ASH WEDNESDAY-FEBRUARY 18, 2026
Entering the Season of Lent
Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent with a public act of confession and contrition. On this day, we acknowledge that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We stand together in humility before our Creator, mindful of our mortality and our need for God’s grace.
Marked with ashes, we remember that we are dust, and to dust we shall return. Yet even in our transience, we are called to live anew according to God’s Word in Jesus Christ—the eternal Word that endures forever.

Historically, Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of a season of repentance and renewal. It was a time when penitents were presented for discipline and restoration, culminating in reconciliation on Maundy Thursday. It was also the moment when catechumens—those preparing for baptism—were formally enrolled in a season of instruction, prayer, and formation, leading toward Easter and the joy of resurrection.

For many Christians, Ash Wednesday is also observed as a day of fasting, signaling the beginning of a Lenten journey of prayer, self-examination, and preparation for the Great Three Days—Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.

At Westminster Presbyterian Church, we invite you to enter this holy season with us—seeking repentance, renewal, and deeper faith as we walk together toward Easter.
